How it all came to be...
I was born into a football family. My father was one of the better linemen ever to play for my hometown of Shelby, Ohio. An unfortunate knee injury in the state all-star game kept him out of college but allowed him to return to Shelby, where he settled down and got married and ultimately I was born. The offense that I heard about growing up was the great single wing. Dad would tell stories of its power and deception. He even had old 16mm film of him playing in the late 50's. You could say I was always a fan of this offense. I loved to watch the direct snap and the kick out blocking along with linemen pulling and running down the field.
Growing up I played football too. Unfortunately my nickname was "little" Lewie. I was a late bloomer and was one of the smaller players on the team up until my senior year. My older brother Ray was 6'2" and 230 and played middle guard. He was what the coaches expected a Lewis to look like. Most of the teams in the league were all about running the football but the single wing had past out of existence in 1972 with Shelby being the last team in the area to still run it. I asked my head coach once why he had dropped it when he took over the position and he said that it was too hard to get the players into college ball running a dinosaur like the single wing.
I went on to college and became a teacher at a small school district near my hometown. I joined the coaching staff in 1991. We were a Wing-T team that enjoyed success running power football. I coached practically every position at one time or another over the next 8 years. I enjoyed coaching the back with power off tackle being my favorite play.
During the 1995 season we had an unfortunate event happen in practice. Our quarterback ran the ball on a roll out and was tackle by the backup quarterback who was playing scout team the both ended up on the ground and later were diagnosed with concussions. We basically were left with the 5'1 inch freshman quarterback or to take another running back and make him a quarterback in two days. I still remember that coaching meeting when I suggested we go to a direct snap single wing and put in an extra fullback to help lead the play. Needless to say the idea wasn't well received and we struggled through a game with fumbled snaps and messed up hand-offs. That day was a start or a turning point for my quest to run the single wing.
